Thirty years of experience at the Purdue University writing center told Muriel Harris that few students could effectively use their handbook.   • PHRG is written to help all writers,including those students whose knowledge of proper terminology is very limited.
    • Question and Correct in Tab 1 provides a “portal” into Prentice Hall Reference Guide by organizing its contents into series of questions about writing, grammar, punctuation, and mechanical concerns as students typically ask them. For example: “Is it Jonas’ bicycle or Jonas’s bicycle?” More extensive lists of these questions are displayed on the front of each tabbed divider to assist in navigation.
    • Compare and Correct in Tab 1 allows students to find answers to their questions without knowing technical terminology. These entries present a sentence with a particular problem coupled with a corrected version for students to compare to their own work. The revision is followed by a page and chapter reference, the correct term for the problem shown, and the correction symbol. A dedicated section of Compare and Correct for ESL is especially effective for its audience.
    • To set apprehensive students at ease, the language in PHRG is comfortably informal and in the second person rather than clinical and terse.
    • Avoiding plagiarism anddocumenting sources are given heightened attention in the new edition.
      • In addition to a thorough discussion of plagiarism in its own Chapter 68, new color-coded samples exemplify exactly what it is to plagiarize a source is and how to avoid it.
      • Source Maps in MLA, APA, CMS, and CSE reproduce the relevant parts of a source, such as screens from a library database, and through color coding its actual entry, show where each component of the citation is found in the source itself.
    • Research is considered with exceptional breadth in a section of nine chapters. Three separate chapters explain research in the library and library databases (Ch. 63), on the web (Ch. 64), and firsthand (Ch. 65).
    • Try This, Hint, and Checklist features contain much of the authors’ wisdom and experience connecting with thousands of students in writing centers and with creating and administering the Purdue Online Writing Lab.
      • 36 Try This boxes suggest things to do on the spot to compose better sentences and papers and to avoid common pitfalls.
      • 37 Hint boxes provide general strategies, rules, and cautionary advice.
      • 14 Checklist boxes enumerate rubrics and points of revision and editing for students to consult to ensure quality and correctness in their compositions.
    • Copious Exercises offer practice for every concept.
    • Proofreading Practice exercises direct students to edit a complete paragraph for a particular type of error. The subject matter of the paragraph is interesting and often leads to ideas for research papers.
    • Pattern Practice exercises direct students to observe a pattern or principle, and then to write sentences of their own that follow the pattern or principle.
    • Proofreading Practice articulates with Pattern Practice to scaffold students from error detection to production of correct prose.
    • Four full-length student papers exemplify Argument (Ch. 7), Writing about Literature (Ch. 6), MLA (Ch. 70), and APA (Ch. 71). Further, Chapter 2 presents student writing with peer review comments, and a subsequently revised version.
    • Six professional documents–memo, email, business letter, cover letter, and two resumes–enrich Chapter 9.
