In Closing

A clear understanding of the Five Core Propositions, the heart of the National Board standards, is provided as the authors dissect each proposition and pose questions about each to stimulate candidate’s thinking about how they put these propositions into practice. Each proposition is tied to a research base presenting the rationale for why they are essential to accomplished teaching. (Ch. 2)

Additional perspectives, practical charts, and tables, help clarify information around NBPTS instructions.

Candidates get an easy to use, condensed yet thorough supplement to the instructions from the NBPTS that helps them go quickly and directly to the information they’re seeking.

Proven research based strategies and validation for the work individuals engage in when supporting candidates is provided in the Appendix, Providing Candidate Support.

The important concepts and ideas come alive through scenarios and examples that help readers better visualize aspects of the Portfolio and Assessment Center through the lens of support providers and candidates. (Chs. 4 and 5)

The most current information and revisions to the NBPTS portfolio instructions are included, giving candidates a competitive edge as they enter the exams.

Examples representing a range of development levels and subject areas relevant to a wide range of teachers are provided through the authors’ combined 39+ years of teaching experience and developmental levels and subject matter.

Readers have access to a useful variety of web-based and professional resources not included in other books of this kind in the Additional Resources Appendix. Such as Tools for Talking about Teaching and a Guide for Using this Book with Candidates.

Expert Reviews

This book will help lessen the mystery and fear in pursuing NBCT. The guiding questions, activities, tables, and explanations help clarify and reinforce information candidates need to know while still emphasizing the use of the material provided by NBPTS. I wish this book would have been around when I was working towards my certification. The questioning prompts about reflection and evidence are invaluable.

The word which comes to mind is comprehensive… informative and easy to read; it is designed in such a way as to be used throughout the process, not just read and passed on.
