Publishing Manager: Exams and grammar

Job description:

To manage and develop the publishing for a list area within the exams and grammar ELT publishing programme, in line with the cost, time and quality parameters set out by the division.

The job requires the ability to inspire and manage a publishing team, plus a thorough understanding of the needs of users and the capacity to translate those needs into market-leading resources.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Identify and evaluate publishing opportunities in the specified list area in order to develop and gain approval for an overall publishing strategy and prioritised plan

In collaboration with Sales and Marketing, lead the publishing team in researching the market to build a deep understanding of trends and needs in the relevant area

Prepare financial forecasts and plan budgets to ensure steady revenue stream for the list

Champion the list so the projects within it move effectively through the publishing and marketing processes

Clearly communicate list and departmental objectives to the publishing team

Work with the team to create and/or assess proposals, commission materials for piloting and prototypes, and present and gain approval for publication proposals

Identify, commission and manage authors. Ensure authors deliver in accordance with market needs

Retain overall responsibility for effective project management to ensure agreed budgets, specifications and schedules are achieved

Liaise with resource managers to ensure needs accurately identified and provided for

Work closely with the publishing team to ensure all members maintain positive, professional relationships with stakeholders including authors, editors, sales, marketing, design and production personnel

Contribute to development of publishers reporting into this post through training, mentoring and delegation

Support departments in the division to contribute to maximising the profitability of the projects

Key requirements:

A recognised ELT qualification and relevant degree

A track record of successful ELT publishing achievements

A minimum of five years’ relevant ELT editorial and publishing experience and at least three years’ experience of EFL teaching, preferably in more than one country, and in the exams, grammar and adult areas

Ability to research, analyse and present information

Excellent communication and negotiation skills

Experience of managing people

Excellent prioritising, time management and problem-solving skills

A sound understanding of what makes good exams and grammar classroom material, and a critical awareness of current  products in the market

A n understanding of the international ELT education market and an appreciation of user needs in the exams and grammar sectors

A keen interest in all aspects of the business including online/ digital opportunities

A can-do attitude combined with a desire to do what it takes to bring projects in on schedule, on budget and to the quality set by the division

Creative and enthusiastic, with excellent commercial sense and a real commitment to the creation of exams and grammar ELT materials.

Knowledge of one or more foreign languages
