Longman Annotated English Poets
11 Oct 06

In 1965 the late F. W. Bateson had a vision for a series of books that would give students, scholars and general readers access to the works of some of the greatest poets in the English language. A scholar of catholic taste and deeply democratic instincts, Bateson defined the vision of the series as follows:

“Its concern is primarily with the meaning of the extant texts in their various contexts.”

It was a laudable aim in 1965, and is perhaps even more so in 2006. And so was born the Longman Annotated English Poets series, which has since become the standard bearer for scholarly editions of poetry.

The books combine comprehensive coverage and a meticulous attention to detail. They give detailed guidance to critical comment and set the poems in their full historical and literary context.

Philip Langeskov, the publisher commented on the decision to re-launch the titles:

“The Longman Annotated English Poets series has a wonderful tradition of open and scrupulous scholarship stretching back to the launch of the first volume in 1965. Edited by some of the world’s leading literary scholars, the series has for many years provided students, scholars and general readers with clean, clear and accessible editions of some of the greatest English poets. I very much hope that this re-launch will bring the same benefits to a new generation of readers and that the series will continue to adhere to F. W. Bateson’s primary vision, which was to elucidate meaning.”

The series re-launch will begin with the five titles listed below. These titles will be joined in November by the third edition of Bill Stevenson’s magnificent Blake: The Complete Poems and in February by Paul Hammond and David Hopkins’s Dryden: Selected Poems.
