Pearson Education takes Entreprenurial Leap into Custom Publishing
17 Oct 03

Pearson Education, the world's leading educational publisher, announced today the launch of the first European print-based custom publishing programme, Pearson Custom Publishing.

Custom Publishing enables customers to select from the complete range of Pearson Education’s market leading publishing programmes including Prentice Hall, Longman and Addison-Wesley, and create a unique book designed specifically to meet their needs. The final book is compiled from complete chapters and typically includes content from the customer themselves.

"University lecturers are dealing with a growing workload of teaching responsibilities and as a result are placing more demands on the teaching resources. The more closely we can match these resources to their needs, the more value we will be offering. That is the essence of our custom publishing strategy," said Rod Bristow, President, Higher Education, Schools and Professional, EMA.

Key features of the Pearson Custom Publishing programme include:

  • Subject to rights clearance, access to the complete range of titles published by Pearson publishing companies;
  • The possibility to integrate your own content into the book;
  • Copyright clearance of third party material within the book.

The customer base span beyond the academic market from anyone seeking a professionally published and branded bespoke book such as an organisation looking to provide employees with company information to a university running distance learning or executive programmes.

Custom published books are available through usual trade channels and local booksellers stock the books. Custom book prices are broadly in line with that of a standard textbook and are based on manufacturing, royalty and third party permission costs. Custom books are created where there is an anticipated sale of 100 copies and customers are required to use the book for a minimum of two years. Once content is agreed, books can be made available in two months.
