Pearson Education acquires Causeway Press
14 Jul 04

Pearson Education, the world’s leading education company, has strengthened its UK school publishing operations with the acquisition of Causeway Press, a publisher of educational books for secondary and further education students.

Causeway Press, founded in 1982 by Mike Haralambos (a best-selling author in his own right as well as the chairman and managing director of the company) first made its name with the publication of the GCSE level title, “Sociology: A New Approach”, which has gone on to sell half a million copies. Best-selling Maths GCSE and A-level Economics titles soon followed and the list now spans a range of subjects including business studies, economics, accounting, sociology, psychology, law, politics, mathematics, technology, history and geography. The editorial team at Causeway Press all come from a teaching background and pride themselves on producing high quality educational books which teachers and students really want. As a result, many of the 189 titles they have published have been re-editioned.

Causeway will retain an editorial office in Ormskirk, Lancashire, with other parts of the business integrated into Pearson Education’s Schools business (which operates under the Longman, Phoenix/e1 and KnowledgeBox names.) Customer orders and returns should continue to be sent to Causeway Press and Trade Counter under existing arrangements.

Mike Haralambos, Managing Director, Causeway Press said “Our strong belief in producing high quality books is one which is shared by the editorial team at Longman making Pearson Education the right home for Causeway. They have listened to us and have shown flexibility to ensure Causeway maintains its editorial integrity”.

Christine Ozden, Managing Director, Longman Schools said “We are absolutely delighted to be working with the team at Causeway Press. They have remarkable publishing expertise and a profound understanding of the needs of teachers and students. Working together, we can grow more rapidly by doing an even better job of supporting teachers in the classroom and enhancing the learning process.”
