Sumantra Ghoshal on Management
22 Jun 05

The death of Sumantra Ghoshal in 2004 denied management thinking of one of its most innovative and influential thinkers. Inspiring and thoughtful, he was one of only a handful of true management "gurus" in Europe.

Ghoshal was a rare combination of idealist, contrarian and intellectual; it was the interplay between these attributes that allowed him to make such a significant mark on the practice of management. He saw the world as it could be, rather than as it was.

The scope of his work spanned the worlds of strategy, organisation and above all, management. Drawing on the fields of economics, sociology, philosophy and psychology, he asked profound questions about the nature of management thinking and the reality of management action.

Sumantra Ghoshal on Management represents Ghoshal's twenty-year intellectual odyssey to challenge the underpinnings of management thought and expose, rework and replace the foundation stones of management thinking.

With articles which appeared in publications such as: The Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review, Academy of Management Review and California Management Review , it is drawn together with original commentaries by leading management thinkers including: Christopher Bartlett, Henry Mintzberg and Lynda Gratton.

It also includes his last, unpublished work, which ties together management and philosophy, and reassesses the fundamental premises on which current management theory and teaching is based.

Exploring his key ideas, and reflecting his genius for collaboration along the way, Sumantra Ghoshal on Management will stand as a companion to a challenging and insightful body of management thought, and in commemoration of one the most inspiring and thoughtful management writers of his generation. In every sense, a force for good.

All royalties from the book and 5% of the publisher's profits will be donated to the Sumantra Ghoshal fund at the London Business School.
