Financial Bliss
28 Jan 08

We all need money, yet we do not always know how to get the best out of it. And for couples, there is another problem: how to talk about financial matters constructively without resorting to rows.

According to research carried out by The Financial Services Authority, 75% of couples find money the hardest thing to talk about in their relationship, while a quarter admitted that they argued when they did try to talk about it. One thing that couples are good at when it comes to money is keeping secrets: 30% said that they have lied to their partner about how much they spend on their credit cards.

For many of us issues around money are way down the list in the first heady days of new love. You're much more likely to discuss the intimate details of past relationships than how you feel about saving or spending.

But as things progress and couples begin think about building a life together: moving in, getting married, having children, it quickly becomes one of the most important factors. Having an understanding of each other's motives and attitudes to money is vital for a strong and healthy relationship.

Without this money will become a huge issue which can affect how you feel, the power balance in the relationship or even start you both on a dangerous path of resentment, unhappiness, insecurity and, in severe cases, the breakdown of the relationship

Now couples have somewhere to turn for advice on all the financial issues they need to think about. Financial Bliss , written by leading journalist and broadcaster Sarah Pennells, is a friendly, clear and readable guide to the twists and turns in the financial maze. It explains not just the risks, but the potential rewards involved in joining finances.

In Financial Bliss, Sarah gives couples everything they really need to know about money and how they deal with it. It also includes insights from Relate counsellor Denise Knowles, into the kinds of problems that money can cause and what couples can do to help themselves.

Financial Bliss encourages couples to be open and honest about money and their expectations around it. They'll discover if they are financially compatible, what to do if they are not and how discussing their finances with each other can be hugely rewarding as they support each other and build their dreams together.

It also outlines how the money in their partnership is viewed by the law, how pre-nuptial agreements work, how they can benefit financially from a marriage or civil partnership and how to protect their individual and joint assets.

Financial Bliss will also help couples plan financially for of life's milestones, both good and bad: getting married; having a baby; buying a house; losing a job; illness and incapacity and death.

It also includes how to do an annual ‘Money MOT', so couples can make sure things are moving in the right direction and that their joint finances are still working in both their best interests.
