The Templar's Curse
16 Jan 08
The main protagonist of The Templars' downfall was Philip IV of France. He viewed the Templars were an obstacle to his campaign to capture the Holy Land. He was also covetous of their fabled treasure and the income from their considerable lands and he owed them 260,000 livres.
He persuaded Pope Clement V to issue a Bull instructing European princes to arrest the Templars on charges that included corruption, heresy, idolatry and sodomy. After being found guilty as charged many were burnt as heretics or made to serve life-long penance. The order was dissolved and their lands dispersed.
But, within months of the execution of de Moray and de Chamey, the Pope and the King were dead. Famine, plague and revolt throughout Europe were to follow. Was the Templar's Curse coming home to roost?
The Templar's Curse chronicles the Knights Templars' rise to prominence and then follows their fall from grace as they faced persecution, torture, execution and exile. It also investigates the consequences of their cruel treatment and their mysteries legacy that still holds our imagination today.
