Mintzberg strikes again!
23 Feb 05
Rescuing strategic thinking from the dead hand of seriousness.
It’s strategy making time again. “Hurrah”, think the executives of Bloggs Corporation plc as they troop off, clutching their PDAs, spreadsheets and power point presentations, to sit in a grey boardroom and come up with the plan to drive the business forward.
What emerges from this meeting of minds? Almost certainly a strategy that is not only the same as last year, but also the same as everyone else. Isn’t the whole point of strategy to make your business different? Instead they deliver something bland, boring and lifeless, which will undoubtedly include that dreadful phrase: “have fun!” (we’d normally avoid an exclamation mark in a media release, but in this case it’s sadly unavoidable.)
If they meant it, that would be fine, but far from having fun, everybody is so serious. If this generated better strategies then we’d leave them to it. But it doesn’t, we get worse ones.
The writing team of Strategy Bites Back, including the ever outspoken and provocative Henry Mintzberg, provide the antidote to boring strategies, banishing consultants who can be straighter than their charts and planners, more predictable than their processes. It will help stimulate more creative strategy thinking and more enjoyable strategy making.
Strategy Bites Back brings you a stimulating, imaginative and unusual mix of voices, with something sharp to say about strategy. From Michael Porter to Hans Christian Andersen, Gary Hamel to Mozart, from Strategy as Little Black Dress to Strategy and the Art of Seduction - you will not find a fresher and more stimulating conversation on strategy.
Strategies with a difference start here, and why not have a good time reading a strategy book for a change?
